What Makes A Good Family Car? Tootle’s Top Tips.

The age old question, style or practicality?

The perfect family car can be hard to find. There’s almost too much to consider: Is there room for children and their friends to fit comfortably? Enough boot space for bulky baggage, including pushchairs? Are there enough up-to-date safety features? Are you going to mind it getting a bit dirty?

If you need some help, the team at Tootle have some top tips to help you find the vehicle that satisfies all of your needs:

Type

Start off with considering what type of car you want. A simple Hatchback boasts a wide-opening boot lid that makes it easy to transport bulky items and can come in a range of sizes, while Estates offer a longer body, creating a larger boot space but can be trickier to manoeuvre.

Another good choice is a people carrier, AKA an MPV. These models may offer unappealing exteriors but offer a vast interior space with some even hosting a third row of seating to transport up to 7 people and sliding doors.

SUVs are a versatile alternative, offering drivers the best of both worlds, space mixed with style. The high seating makes it easier to put kids in car seats, some models can come with seven seats and most boast spacious boots. The downside? An increase in fuel costs. (Electric is always an option but read more about that here).

Safety Ratings

Once you’ve decided on the type of car you want, safety will be the next priority so check the Euro NCAP safety ratings. Look at the scores for crash safety and child protection, and also take the time to check if they have any advanced safety systems, such as autonomous emergency braking.

Airbags

When you have younger children, a main priority you need to consider is whether you can switch off the passenger airbags. With rear-facing child seats, not being able to turn off the airbag can be a massive safety issue should you find yourself in an unfortunate scenario. Just remember to reactive them once they’re in a front-facing seat or if you have adult passengers.

Isofix

For a quicker, easier and, most importantly safer installation of a car seat, Isofix clips are a must. The mounting points are ideally easy to access and easy to fit, so we recommend to take your car seat along with you when viewing.

Child-Friendly Features

Probably not a must-have in your family car, but this is something to surely make the school run easier! From integrated sunblinds and dark interiors which hide stains to extra storage spaces and luxury features such as built-in DVD players, there’s plenty of desirable extras on the market.

There are many family cars out there, but what will you choose?
